K2 is a well-known content management system which helps users to create category-specific content types such as articles, blog posts, product pages, directory listings easily thanks to its flexibility.

In this article, we are going to learn more about how to create extra fields with K2 by following the steps as below.

In this tutorial, we take LifeMag Joomla! Template by TemPlaza as an example.

STEP 1: CREATE AN EXTRA FIELD GROUP

From your administration site, please go to Components > K2 > Extra Field Groups and click “New” button.

You can see the following image for details.

STEP 2: CREATE EXTRA FIELDS

Please go to Components > K2 > Extra Fields to create new extra fields and assign them to the group you have just created in the first step.

There is a range of field types available, including:

  • Text field
  • Text area
  • Drop-down selection
  • Multi-select list
  • Radio buttons
  • Link
  • CSV data
  • Searchable labels
  • Date
  • Image
  • Header

You can add the default values if needed.

STEP 3: ASSIGN EXTRA FIELD GROUP TO A CATEGORY

Please go to Components > K2 > Categories to create a new category and assign the extra field group you have created to this category.

STEP 4: CREATE A NEW ARTICLE

To create a new K2 item, please follow this path: Components > K2 > Items > New.

You need to choose a category which has an assigned extra field group for this item.

After that, please go to tab Extra Fields. You can add the information you want to show there.

If you have already added a default value in step 2, you can keep it or change it to other information.

Finally, please go to your front end of site and refresh. You will see extra fields you have just created display.
