Tet Nguyen Dan or Tetis one of the most important and meaningful occasion to Vietnamese people and celebrated on the first day of the first month in Lunar Calendar in about seven days. Also, it is considered as the biggest and most popular festival of the year in Viet Nam.
This is the occasion for Vietnamese to express their respect and remembrance for their ancestors as well as welcoming the New Year with their beloved family members.
Due to the important role of Tet, Vietnamese will begin their preparations well in the upcoming time of Tet cleaning their homes, polishing every utensil, decorating the house with kumquat tree, branches of peach blossom, and many other colorful flowers. The ancestral altar is especially taken care of, with careful decoration of five kinds of fruits and votive papers, along with many religious rituals. Everybody, especially children, buy new clothes and shoes to wear on the first days of New Year.
Similarly to other Asian countries, red and yellow color are believed to bring good fortune and these colors can be seen everywhere in Lunar New Year. Especially, everybody always be nice and smile to hope a better year and they think that what they do on the beginning of the year will determine the fully promising life for the whole year.
At Tet, many traditional food are prepared such as candied fruit, melon seeds, coconut jam, Chung cake, pickled onion, frozen meat. Young people also prepare many interesting activities and traditional games including cooking rice, cock fighting, watching lion dance. Many people visit relatives to wish a happy new year, adults will give lucky money for children and woman like going to pagoda to wish good things will come to their family.
